The exact number of native termites within Australia is not known. It has been reported that to date over 350 species occur and are mainly grass feeders. Within the Australian landscape, termites play a very important and necessary role within the environment.

Termites found in living trees can impact stability considerably and be a serious threat to built structures. Fortunately not all species cause impact or serious impact but merely take up residence within or upon a tree. It is important to have the termites accurately identified for their pest status and indeed the problems are termite related.
